‘Time Machine Travel’ to the Past of Kazan

Some sights of Kazan are hard to miss as they are pretty visible, for instance, the ancient white-stone Kremlin, the Kul Sharif mosque or the Suyumbika Tower. They will do the best ever background for your Kazan album photos.

But if you choose to conceive the city itself, its origins, people who glorified it, you might use a ‘time machine’ — numerous city museums where you can touch historical artefacts and see famous people's belongings with your own eyes. Visiting museums will mean both great discoveries and entertainment.

For instance, you may join a real «paleontological expedition» at the Museum of Natural History of Tatarstan where you can dig a reptile skeleton out of sand.

The Museum of Islamic Culture will tell you the history of the northernmost Islamic civilization and the role of Islam in the Tatars' history and culture.

The Museum of the History of Statehood of Tatar People and the Republic of Tatarstan displays authentic items that date from the Volga Bulgaria, the Golden Horde and the Kazan Khanate epochs. The museum boasts a unique 10th-century Czekh coin which owes its historical value to the fact of having been found within the territory of the Kazan Kremlin that substantiated a thousand-year age of the latter.

At the National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan, city's largest museum complex, you can have a look at the carriage in which Catherine the Great went for rides while being on her visit to Kazan.

A journey back to the 70s and 80s of the 20th century, so recent but anyhow almost forgotten, is easily done if you choose to visit the Soviet Lifestyle Museum that is now very popular among the citizens and guests. It exhibits items that reflect the epoch's spirit and demonstrate the way people lived in a huge multinational country proud to be named the USSR. Some of the museum’s exhibits were either presented or signed by famous Russian and foreign artists.

You may also track the rich city's history in museums of well-known people of culture and art who have their lives interconnected with Kazan: composer Salikh Saydashev, writer Lev Tolstoy, father of the Tatar literature and contemporary Tatar language Gabdulla Tuqay, Musa Jalil, Yevgeny Baratynsky, Maxim Gorky, Feodor Shalyapin, and others.

The Kazan museums display and update expositions on an ongoing basis, including exhibits in vaults of the leading Russia's museums. Be sure you are always a welcome guest in here and be ready to hear fascinating stories about the city of Kazan.
